BRANCH DIRECTOR (Librarian I, grade 17) SOMERSET COUNTY LIBRARY SYSTEM                    
Duties include:

  • Managing the activities of the North Plainfield Library including overseeing and participating in hiring to ensure that positions are filled with qualified applicants; planning, organizing, and directing work of subordinates so that work is accomplished efficiently and in a timely manner.
  • Developing annual goals and objectives for the Branch taking into account the SCLS Strategic Plan, community needs, changes in technology and trends within the library profession.
  • Managing the activities of the Branch so that consistent progress is made toward achieving those goals.

  • Explaining, interpreting and promoting library policies and services to library users and staff.
  • Responding to questions and complaints from library users about services, policies, procedures and materials in the collection.
  • Representing the Library at Advisory Committee meetings, municipal government meetings and community events.
  • Serving on SCLS and other professional committees; attending local, state and national conferences in order to keep skills current.

Hours: 37½ hours/week (including evening and weekend hours as necessary)
Annual Salary: $80,416

Requirements:
N.J. Librarian’s certificate; MLS (from an ALA accredited program preferred).  Minimum of eight years experience in a public library as a degreed librarian including hands-on experience with programming, collection development, reference services and outreach.  Minimum of three years experience supervising staff and managing the programs and activities of a public library branch or department. 

Strong interpersonal, supervisory and management skills and strong oral and written communication skills.  Ability to clearly explain, interpret and promote library policies to library users and staff in a way that balances local needs and system-wide expectations.  Ability to make effective presentations to colleagues and community groups.  Ability to work with colleagues, municipal officials, Advisory Committee members, library users, and vendors using tact and courtesy even when under stress.

Knowledge of print and non-print reference and readers advisory resources.  Knowledge of current library technologies and their application to the provision of library services to library patrons.  Ability to effectively use technology tools including the library’s automated system, email and Microsoft Office applications such as Word and Excel.  Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

DIRECTOR OF LIBRARY SERVICES, GEORGIAN COURT UNIVERSITY

SUMMARY:    
Georgian Court University seeks a creative leader with a vision for the modern university library that combines the traditional roles of the academic library with the increasing place of electronic information technologies in an environment that fosters collaborative, active learning and the integration of academic and student life.  This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position with faculty status. 

The 44,000 square foot Sister Mary Joseph Cunningham Library, opened in 1993, has more than 600,000 items in various formats, several computer labs, the university’s archives, the Thomas Merton Collection, an audiovisual preview room and an instructional materials center containing elementary and secondary curriculum materials.  The library building also houses the Office of Information Technology, the Academic Development Center and a NASA Educator Resource Center.  The Director supervisors 6 professional librarians, 9 full-time staff members and a number of part-time staff members.  Reports to the Associate Provost for Academic Program Development.
Start Date:  July 1, 2010

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan and manage all aspects of library operations: budget, personnel, services, program planning, development and assessment, facilities and equipment. 
  • Implement university vision through long-range planning. 
  • Plan and implement new and enhanced user-services, including information literacy and remote access for populations at off-campus instructional locations. 
  • Implement a plan to transform the library into a more collaborative, active learning space where content, technology and services intersect to support and enhance student learning and the university’s plan to integrate academic and student life. 
  • Create library policies in collaboration with library faculty members. 
  • Coordinate collection development and management of library collections.
  • Collaborate with Office of Information Technology on integration of emerging technologies and provision of electronic resources to the university community.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in library science from a library school program accredited by the American Library Association and an earned second master’s/advanced degree.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of current issues and trends in academic librarianship and in higher education.

LIBRARY DIRECTOR, MAHWAH PUBLIC LIBRARY
The principal mission of the Mahwah Public Library (MPL) is to provide comprehensive library facilities and services to the residents of the Township as well as other libraries within the Bergen County Cooperative Library System (BCCLS). The Director, under the direction of, and reporting to, the Library Board of Trustees is the lead professional and supervisor responsible for implementing the Library’s mission. The work involves, but is not limited to, planning, developing and coordinating services and resources related to the overall operation of the library. The work requires the exercise of considerable professional skill, initiative and independent judgment.

Responsibilities: General
  • Is responsible for the overall administration and operation of the library in a manner consistent with established policies and good business practices.
  • Assists the Board in short and long range planning.
  • Reviews and refines all policies and procedures to ensure optimal library service. The director also recommends the adoption of new policies as needed.
  • In consultation with the board president, prepares the agenda for board meetings and prepares a packet of information to be mailed to each board member prior to each board meeting.

Education & Experience RequirementsMasters degree in library science from an ALA accredited post secondary institution plus ten years of increasingly responsible public library experience, with at least five years in managerial positions.

General Description of Position:

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Ability:
Must have proven managerial and organization skills necessary to implement and maintain all library areas such as staff development, community relations, collection development, planning, budget, technical services, and circulation.

Minimum Acceptable Training, Education & Job Experience:
MLS (Masters Degree in Library or Information Science) plus a NJ State Professional Librarian’s Certificate; the ability to read, write, and speak the English language sufficiently to perform the duties of this position; minimum five years professional experience in a public library including three years in library administration is preferred.

Responsibilities:

Experience should include familiarity with the use and management of computerized library resources in a networked environment (preferably BCCLS), thorough knowledge of financial management; collaborative and consensus-building skills; detail-oriented, flexible and creative; possessing outstanding interpersonal, verbal and written skills.

Summary: This position calls for an enthusiastic tech-savvy full-time [35 hrs. a week] YA librarian with an MLS from ALA accredited university and a New Jersey Professional Librarians Certificate. Some YA experience is preferred. Benefit pkg. included.

Duties:
-Develops, implements, and evaluates library programs appropriate for young adults and parents of young adults.
-Provides professional reference service and readers’ advisory services appropriate to the age group, and to parents and educators.

Reports to Supervising Librarian, Charles F. Cummings New Jersey Information Center at the Newark Public Library
Librarians will:

  • provide reference services to customers in person, by phone, email, letter, etc. for local history information as well as current local information, emphasizing Newark, Essex County, and New Jersey
  • use Clavis, the library’s catalog, various indices and finding aids, databases, and the internet to assist customers with their reference questions
  • provide guidance to researchers working on complex or long term projects using the materials available in the CFCNJIC
    Contacts and provides referrals to other libraries, agencies and organizations for local information when necessary
  • have responsibility for some aspect of collection processing or maintenance which may include organizing a collection of papers or archive, creating a finding aid, updating an index, re-housing materials, cataloging, or other project

INTERNSHIP, CLARK PUBLIC LIBRARY
The Clark Public Library is seeking an intern for the children’s department, 15-20 hours per week.  The intern will assist the children’s librarian with a variety of duties with an emphasis on children’s services.  Responsibilities include providing reference, reader’s advisory, family programming, computer assistance, and customer service support for children and adults.  Hours include some weekends and possibly one evening a week.  This is a paid internship.  Prefer a student who is just beginning their master’s program.  Course credit may also be arranged with approval of the college administration.
