SNAPSHOT DAY: A Day in the Life of New Jersey Libraries

Join Us and Be Counted! Take a “Snapshot” of Your Library on October 24

Get ready to take a “snapshot” of your library on Wednesday, October 24, 2012, for the Fourth Annual Library Snapshot Day across New Jersey, sponsored by the NJ State Library and NJ Library Association. “Snapshot:  One Day in the Life of New Jersey Libraries,” originated in New Jersey in 2009 to help demonstrate the importance and value of libraries, and raise public awareness that libraries are busier than ever. The goal of this effort is to provide a snapshot of what happens in a typical day in the life of NJ libraries – from checking out books and helping children with homework, to helping residents find jobs, do their taxes, start their own businesses and much more.

During Snapshot Day 2012, NJ libraries of all types will once again join forces to collect statistics, stories, photographs and videos to illustrate how libraries are being used, the number of people using them and patron comments about how important libraries are to their communities. Libraries in every category – public, school, academic and special – are encouraged to participate on October 24 or anytime during the surrounding two-week period. Plan a special event, take photos and video of library happenings, survey customers, collect statistics and involve your local media in promoting the resources and programs that are so vital to your communities. Why not contact your local newspaper now and invite them to attend and report on your library’s Snapshot Day events?

To make it even more exciting, we have added a new enhancement this year – the New Jersey Library Roadshow.  Inspired by OCLC and Library Journal and sponsored by LibraryLinkNJ, a team led by Andy Woodworth and Sophie Brookover, and a State Library team comprising the State Library’s Library Development Bureau and Marketing staff will travel the state, reporting in real-time on the Snapshot Day happenings.  If you would like your library to be considered for a stop on the New Jersey Library Roadshow tour, please respond by October 8th and let us know what you have planned for the day.

More information will be coming soon.  For questions about Snapshot Day, or to be considered for a Library Roadshow visit, contact Peggy Cadigan at the New Jersey State Library 609-278-2640, x113, pcadigan@njstatelib.orgor Heidi Cramer at 973-733-7837,

About Snapshot Day

Snapshot Day is a joint project of the New Jersey State Libraryand the New Jersey Library Association. Established in 2009, Snapshot Day is a model of collaboration and a great example of a multi-type library project that captures the impact that New Jersey libraries have on their communities on a typical day. Snapshot Day began in NJ and has been replicated in more than 30 states across the country and has gone international. The project received the 2011 American Library Association President’s Advocacy Award and was adopted by the American Library Association as a national program.

About the New Jersey Library Roadshow

The New Jersey Library Roadshow, an enhancement to NJ’s annual Snapshot Day, will use photos, videos and brief dispatches from New Jersey’s highways & byways to showcase innovative outreach efforts in public, school, academic and special libraries across the Garden State. Inspired by The Great Library Roadshow (originally sponsored by OCLC and Library Journal in March 2012), The NJ Library Roadshow will be sponsored by LibraryLinkNJ, The New Jersey Library Cooperative.
