Adult Services Department Head (Principal Librarian) - Livingston Public Library

The Livingston Public Library is seeking a bright, dynamic, and enthusiastic manager to provide leadership and direction to our Adult Services Department. The Department Head must have a passion for creating an environment of teamwork that embraces change and excellent customer service. He/she must possess effective management skills and experience, and be knowledgeable about the administrative and programmatic operations of public libraries.



● Supervising Adult Services Department staff, including scheduling, training, mentoring, and assigning tasks to department personnel, maintaining staff morale, and reviewing workflow and procedures to ensure maximum quality and efficiency.
● Providing timely and objective feedback to Adult Services Department staff.
● Coordinating collection development within the department for all formats in response to community needs, and participating in ordering specific print and non-print collections.
● Planning, coordinating and participating in the development and execution of a variety of programs for Adults both in-house and at outreach sites.
● Building partnerships with local businesses, community organizations, elected officials and community leaders to further strengthen the Library's relationship with the community.
● Developing long and short-term goals related to Adult Services.
● Submitting monthly and annual reports on the progress of objectives, reference and programming statistics, and trends in the department.
● Setting budget priorities and monitoring expenditures within the Department.
● Working with appropriate library staff to seek and implement grant funding for both new and continuing projects related to Adult Services.

● Master's Degree in Library Science (or equivalent) from an ALA accredited program
● NJ Professional Librarian’s certificate issued by the NJ Department of Education
● At least two years of post-MLS experience in the specialized field of Reference/ Outreach/ or Adult Services
● Demonstrated experience in the following areas: flexibility, initiative, teamwork and customer service
● Ability to communicate clearly, courteously and effectively with library patrons and staff
● Ability to work well independently and collaboratively across the Library to get things accomplished
● Creativity, flexibility, and initiative in accommodating community and staff needs
● Commitment to diversity and inclusion
● Continuing education to update professional skills via workshops and online webinars
● Active participation in professional library associations

The schedule for this exempt position is 35 hours per week, including a regular evening, and Saturday and Sunday coverage on a rotating basis.


If hired, the applicant must be in compliance with the residency requirements of the New Jersey First Act within one year of the date of hire and must participate in the PERS retirement system. The successful applicant will complete a drug test and thorough background check.
