Archival Basics: Tools for the Unexpected Archivist

This workshop will provide an introduction to archival principles, standards, and practices with an emphasis on arrangement, description, and preservation. It is designed with the "non-archivist" in mind, especially librarians in diverse library settings who, by happy accident or formal design, are charged with the care of archival material in their collections. The workshop will use a hybrid approach that will include both lecture and hands-on demonstration with the primary goal of providing a basic grounding in archival management to make the participants more comfortable working with archival materials as well as providing the tools with which they can continue to explore and understand archives.

Erika Gorder, Archivist & Library Faculty, Special Collections and University Archives, Rutgers University Libraries
Tim Corlis, Head of Preservation, Special Collections and University Archives, Rutgers University Libraries
