Librarian 1: Youth Services, Trenton Free Public Library, Trenton

Trenton Free Public Library is seeking a dynamic, Youth Services Librarian to oversee the Youth Services Department under supervision of the Director to provide innovative programming to a diverse population, ensure the youth collection remains robust and relevant in its offerings, and build strong partnerships with the community. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to public service, experience working with children from birth to age 17, excellent communication and organizational skills, and collaborate effectively to maintain a strong, competent youth services team that consistently meets the needs of our patrons, community, and partners.

  • A strong knowledge and love of children’s and young adult literature
  • Promote and foster a love of reading and promote literacy through storytimes, reading based programming, class visits, and outreach read alouds
  • Design and provide engaging activities that help young people develop their creativity, interests, and talents
  • Believes strongly in the rights of children and young adults and cares about making a positive impact in the community
  • Develop and maintain the appearance and layout of youth spaces to ensure it is a safe, inviting area filled with relevant resources
  • Empower youth to be enthusiastic readers and become resourceful users of information
  • Acts as library representative at meetings and conferences. 
  • Composes publicity releases or program announcements for media, newsletters, or other publications. 
  • Establishes and maintains effective work relationships with community organizations, school groups, library associates and the general public. 
  • Assists public and staff in making effective use of library equipment and provides formal training and instruction in the effective use of electronic resources.
  • Designs, organizes and maintains library materials and electronic resources by using appropriate systems of access that are compatible with the needs and styles of learning of the public.
  • Reviews collections to develop or discard/discontinue; assists in the selection and evaluation of resources for delivery in the most appropriate format
  • Participates in professional associations concerned with improving methods and techniques of information services.
  • May provide instruction and technical expertise to nonprofessional and paraprofessional staff
  • Exchanges ideas, information, and opinions with supervisors to formulate policies, procedures, programs, etc. to provide high quality services.
  • Mentors newer staff members
  • Performs Related Duties as Required
  • NOTE: Incumbents may be required to complete cross-training in one or more of the following specializations: Children's Services, 
  • Reference Services, Technical Services.



A Master's degree in Library or Information Sciences in a library program accredited by the American Library Association or from a New Jersey College Master's program in Library Science that has been deemed acceptable by Thomas Edison State University.


Appointees may be required to possess a valid certification as a Professional Librarian issued by Thomas Edison State University.

BENEFITS PACKAGE: Salary: $55,022 per year, ($30.23 per hour) Vacation: 20 days per year (accruing @ 1.666 days a month) Sick Days: 15 days per year (accruing @ 8.25 hours a month) Personal Days: 5 days per year (accruing @ 1.25 hours a month) Paid Holidays: 14 per calendar year as per union contract Medical Coverage: Several Plans from which to choose (cost based on plan choice) Eye Care: Reimbursement @ $100 for single vision and bifocals Dental Plan: Small monthly fee for coverage dependent upon carrier selection Work Week: 35 hr., flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends Residency: New Jersey Resident within one year
