Librarian 2 Full-Time (Technical Services)- East Orange Public Library

The East Orange Public Library seeks a dedicated and self-motivated professional who loves cataloging, technology and people!  Under the direct supervision of the Head of Technical Services and Technology, the successful candidate will perform original and copy cataloging of a variety of formats using Sierra, OCLC and other tools and in compliance with AACR2, MARC, LCSH, and RDA standards and local cataloging procedures; recommend work procedures following professional standards to develop and update technical services policies and procedures; take the lead, determine work to be accomplished, coordinate assignments, and instruct technical staff in the performance of their duties; add and update content on the Library’s website and the Library’s intranet; develop, create and present classes on library digital resources and services; assist in selecting materials for acquisition and withdrawal; cover the Reference Desk at least one evening a week and on rotating Saturdays.  In addition, serve as the backup for the supervision of the proper functioning of technical services and technology.  Position includes 37 ½ hour work week.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

•    Knowledge of public library services and programs
•    Knowledge of cataloging and classification practices, including AACR2, DDC, LCSH, MARC, RDA and awareness of emerging trends  
•    Knowledge and skill in various technologies
•    Strong oral and written communications skills
•    Ability to interact courteously and effectively with the public and with other staff
•    Ability to exhibit good judgement and respond in an effective manner to the concerns of library patrons
•    Ability to understand and interpret library policies, procedures, and rules
•    Ability to keep records and produce work accurately
•    Ability to organize work for efficient use of time
•    Ability to represent the library at professional and community meetings
•    Ability to work in a team environment and also independently


MLS or Information Science Degree from an ALA-accredited program is required. Professional experience working in a public library or similar environment is required.  Supervisory experience and familiarity with automated integrated library systems is preferred.  Knowledge of and interest in web site technology are highly desirable.
