Library Director - Englewood Free Public Library

The Englewood Public Library Director is responsible for all library functions, overseeing day-to-day operations, as well as planning. This position implements library policy, as determined by the Board of Trustees, and the supervision of all library personnel.

Responsibilities include:
Library Board of Trustees
• Formulate and recommend policies to the Board; implement and review policies, procedures and practices.
• Prepare an annual operating budget and manage capital funds as to reflect the Library’s mission. Submit an annual budget to the Board in conjunction with its Finance Committee.
• Direct and supervise expenditures of library funds.
• Assist the Board in developing a strategic plan and yearly goals and actions based on the plan.
• Prepare for and participate in Board and committee meetings.
• Monitor legislative activities related to libraries and keep Board and library staff informed.
• Orient new trustees and serve as a resource to the Board.
Library Personnel
• Recruit, hire, train, supervise, evaluate, promote and terminate professional and support library staff (engage Board participation when required).
• Provide in-service programs for staff training and development and encourage staff participation in BCCLS programs.
• Develop open, regular and two-way communication with the library staff.
• Participate as necessary in staff grievance and disciplinary procedures.

Users and Community
• Interpret policies to staff and general public.
• Administer collection development, including materials selection, uniform and appropriate cataloging, de-accessioning criteria, and conservation and security of materials.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of library services in relation to the changing needs of a diverse community. Plan, organize and direct a balanced program of library services.
• Communicate the value of library and information services and intellectual freedom to the public and decision-makers.
• Maintain effective working relationships with the Board, City officials, Friends of the Englewood Public Library, community organizations, school groups, outside vendors and the public.
• Recommend and administer a public relations program.
• Represent the library and its objectives and activities to community groups.
• Represent the library in professional meetings.
• With the Board’s approval, develop additional sources of library funding.
• Develop and oversee technology plans, including new services and upgrades to existing equipment and network, keeping abreast of new content management systems and social networking avenues.
• Take advantage of cost effective services provided through BCCLS and the State Library.
Facility Management and Safety
• Establish and maintain a schedule for preventive maintenance.
• Work with the City to implement capital improvements.
• Respond promptly to emergency facility needs as they arise.
• Maintain a safe and secure environment for staff and public. Ensure the library meets its role as a warming and cooling center.



• A master’s degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution.
• Professional certification in compliance with NJ state law.
• Thorough knowledge of the theories, principles and techniques of librarianship and NJ library law, as well as current and developing technologies.
• Relevant library experience including serving as an administrator and/or supervisor.
• Effective verbal and written communication, social and interpersonal skills.
• Superior organizational skills.
