Library Director - New Providence Memorial Library

The Board of Trustees of the New Providence Memorial Library is seeking a professional Librarian to serve as Director. New Providence is home to 12,000 residents within 3.6 square miles in Northwestern Union County. The warm and friendly borough is home to several Fortune 500 companies, has a vibrant local business community, top rated public school system, and beautiful residential neighborhoods. The Director will serve as the administrator of the library and be responsible for planning, organizing and overseeing the operation of the library according to state laws, library policies, and the authority delegated by the Board of Trustees. The Director will establish and maintain effective working relationships with the trustees, borough officials, library personnel, the Friends of the Library volunteer organization, community groups and the general public. The Director will create a welcoming environment that promotes literacy and diversity


• Manage operations of the library on a daily basis, which include but are not limited to:
• Supervise purchasing of library media.
• Recruit, hire, train, supervise and evaluate professional and support library staff.
• Develop open, regular and two-way communication with the library staff.
• Prepare an annual operating budget and managers the capital funds as to reflect the Library’s mission.
• Prepare for and attend Library Board meetings and Borough meetings.
• Encourage professional growth for all staff with training opportunities, participation in NJLA, LUCC and other committees and in-service training.
• Develop outreach programs to provide library services to all residents of New Providence.
• Promote fiscal health by prusingin outside funding, reducing costs and cooperating with the Friends of the Library volunteer organization.
• Prepare the annual report to the NJ State Library, and periodic statistical reports for the library board, borough official and public.
• Monitor legislation related to the library and keep the library board, appropriate borough officials and library staff informed.
• Improve library advocacy to borough officials, the public and local organizations.
• Represent the library at professional meetings, conferences and seminars.
• Develop and oversee technology plans, which include consideration of new services and upgrades of existing equipment.
• Other duties as assigned by the Board of Trustees


• Thorough knowledge of the theories, principles and techniques of librarianship and NJ library laws.
• Experience in preparing a library budget which reflects the goals and objectives of the library and managing the expenditure of funds throughout the year.
• Ability to communicate effectively and share knowledge with others.
• Experience preparing and presenting statistical and technical reports.
• Ability to develop and mange convenient, accessible and cost effective facilities and services that promote and support the organization’s mission and strategic direction.
• Ability to relate to employees and associates and handle personnel issues in a positive, professional and responsive manner. This includes the completion of performance evaluations on a regular basis.
• Knowledge of current library trends, innovations and social media.




An ALA accredited MLS, MLIS or equivalent degree. New Jersey State Certification required.
A minimum of five years of public library experience with at least 2 years as a supervisor is required.
