NJLA Statement Regarding the Closing of the Watchung Branch of the Somerset County Library

The members of the New Jersey Library Association are deeply concerned with the recent decision of the Watchung Boro Council to close its branch facility of the Somerset County Library.  The closing of any branch library is a very serious step and should be taken only after there has been extensive community discussion. The closing of this educational facility impacts the quality of life for local residents.

In Somerset County, library materials and staff in all branches of the Somerset County Library  are the responsibility of the Somerset County Library Commission..  Building and maintaining of a library branch, however, is a local decision financed with local tax dollars. If the Watchung Boro Council votes to close the Watchung Branch Library, the residents of Watchung will still have access to all services of the Somerset County Library through the other branch facilities.

This is a local decision and must be made by the residents of that community. Once a facility is closed, it will probably never be reopened in the future. We urge the residents of Watchung to express their feelings  regarding the closure of this  library.    It is your community and your tax dollars.
