Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Assistant Director or designee, the part-time grant-funded English as a Second Language (ESL) Coordinator works to connect students with and teach ESL classes in accordance with the guidelines presented in a grant offered by the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development. The ESL Coordinator also works alongside the library administration to hire consultants for career pathways classes and workshops to supplement the ESL class schedule. This is a non-union position. This grant funded position will only be offered for the duration of the grant (October 1, 2019 to September 30, 2020, with the possibility of extension).

Distinguishing Characteristics:

  • Position in this class requires knowledge of ESL teaching methods and an ability to build, organize, and sustain a robust ESL program.

  • Works under general supervision of the Assistant Director or designee, but this position requires an individual who is self-directed.

Examples of Work:

  • Schedules group classes for ESL in accordance with grant specifications.
  • Corresponds with prospective students via email and/or telephone and schedules them for classes.
  • Works within the budgets assigned by the library administration and the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
  • Teaches ESL and literacy classes.
  • Selects books, magazines, newspapers, and other materials to assist with the teaching of ESL and literacy.
  • Organizes and proctors pre- and post-tests to ESL students in order to measure and report progress.

Hours:

This is a part-time position with a maximum of 19 hours assigned per week. Work must be completed on-site and during hours which the library is open, as assigned by the Assistant Director or Library Director.

Qualifications/Requirements: 
  • Education, Experience and Knowledge Requirements
  • Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English and preferably a second language such as Spanish or Korean sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
  • TOEFL certification preferred.
