P-T Library Assistant - Children's Department, Long Branch Public Library

The Long Branch Public Library announces an opening for a P/T Library Assistant to work in our children’s department. This will be a person who connects children and our community and who contributes to a dynamic, welcoming community resource with vibrant collections to provide opportunities for lifelong learning, research, and recreation. Compensation is $15.82 per hour.

Job duties include:

  • Checking in and out items. 
  • Manning incoming calls and routing them to proper locations if needed. 
  • Offering book suggestions and help in finding suitable and/or desirable items. 
  • Help with catalog inquiries, stack navigation, as well as any general questions as related to the library collection. 
  • Shelving, shelf reading, cleaning and general stack maintenance when time allows or when needed. 
  • Perform other duties specific to the Children’s Department including but not limited to: leading story times, assisting with school visits, aiding with art projects and library décor, and assisting with special events, parties or programs.
Qualifications/Requirements: 

Requirements:
Candidate must be able to speak, read and understand Spanish fluently. 
Have a high school diploma or equivalent

The successful candidate will:

  • Meet and communicate effectively with library patrons and the public. 
  • Become familiar with all library facilities, materials, and services. 
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. 
  • Evaluate and prioritize many different projects. 
  • Learn library classifications and arrangements as well as possess a working knowledge of the Dewey decimal system. 
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions and accept responsibility and supervision. 
  • Ability and willingness to self-start, perform, and follow up on day-to-day tasks and projects without having to be asked or instructed.
  • Have a working knowledge of and ability to work with computers. 
  • Perform detailed and wide-ranging tasks and follow up on questions or problems which may present themselves. 
  • Know and understand internal and public policies of the library.
