PT Library Assistant, Children's Programs - Haddonfield Library

The Haddonfield Public Library is seeking an part-time Library Assistant to directly assist the Children's Librarian in the preparation and delivery of programming in a cheerful manner that encourages participation and excitement about the library and its resources. This position is for up to 8 hours per week with some weekends.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
• Assist in story time and program preparations
• Run 1-2 weekend story times each month
• Prepare crafts or other program materials for the week
• Pull books requested by the Children’s Librarian
• Work on flannel boards
• Assist librarian in the ongoing weeding of the library collection
• Fill in for story time when the Children’s Librarian is unavailable
• Assist with special events, parties, or programs
• Participates in marketing and outreach efforts including:
o Make shelf-talkers
o Creates artistic displays for the children's department, especially for the Summer Reading programs
o Assist in creating monthly book displays and rotating display collections
• Shelving and shelf reading of library materials
• Checks and maintains shelves to ensure good order
• Shifts collections as needed
• Helps customers to gain access to the public PCs, Internet and other computer applications, including printing, in the children's department
• Works with supervisor on duty to see that the library's code of conduct is followed
• Assists librarians with inventory of collections
• Collects data for statistical reports, upon the request of the director or supervisor
• Notifies director and related staff of problems with the building or equipment
• Performs other duties as assigned

• Ability to stimulate interest and encourage participation in reading and other library activities.
• Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the general public and to maintain effective working relationships with other library staff.
• Ability to maintain the physical security of the public, staff, and building and to work with supervisors and other Public Safety personnel to achieve this.
• Ability to maintain established library records and files.
• Knowledge of books and background in literature helpful.
• Strong organizational ability.
• Ability to comprehend, analyze and interpret regulations, policies and procedures of the library
• Creative ability for displays and designs.


High school graduate or equivalent; previous library or educational experience preferred; proficiency with computers and related software a plus
MLS or Library School Required:
