PT Youth Service Librarian- Pennsauken Public Library

Under the supervision of the Library Director, the Youth Services Librarian is responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating all children and young adult services and activities.  

The ideal candidate will provide friendly, high quality customer service to library patrons and has an in-depth knowledge of children’s and teen literature with the ability to provide high quality readers advisory. They create and execute programs under the direction of the Head of Youth Services and participate in executing department initiatives and programs.

Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, preparing statistical reports on departmental activities and use, maintaining the collection budget for JUV/YA materials, staying current on new developments in the library field (particularly with regard to children’s and teen services), providing reference assistance to patrons of all ages, and writing the annual report on youth services.

The successful candidate will be enthusiastic, flexible, and forward thinking.  Strong knowledge of literacy, child development, and literature for children and teens are vital in this role.  S/he will be comfortable planning programs that encourage children to read and sharing literacy tips with parents.  Strong organizational skills, program management skills, and a sense of humor are essential.  Knowledge of current library technologies and demonstrated experience using technology (including library automated systems, online reference resources, and Microsoft Office programs such as Word and Excel) are required.


 An ALA accredited MLS or MLIS or a Professional Librarian’s certificate issued by Thomas Edison State College or the New Jersey Dept. of Education or equivalent state certification and eligibility for NJ certification
Current MLS/MLIS students with prior public library experience will be considered.  
Knowledge of, and aptitude for, utilizing computers with Microsoft Office products and other technologies.
Candidates must possess knowledge of current youth services standards and practices as well as excellent written and spoken communication skills.
Ability to work flexible hours, including days, nights and weekends.
The ability to work independently and be self-directed. 
Manage detail, set priorities, meet deadlines, work quickly and accurately, follow directions, and maintain confidentiality.
Ability to manage multiple projects and work assignments in a fast-paced environment.
Knowledge of media relations, social networking tools and marketing.
High level of interpersonal and organizational skills necessary for working with a number of constituents including library staff, trustees, volunteers, vendors, community and corporate groups, and the general public.
Must possess a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and means of transportation to fulfill job duties in New Jersey and surrounding areas.
