PT Youth Services Cataloger - Union Public Library

The Union Public Library, serving a community of more than 56,000 residents and conveniently located in Union Township is seeking a cataloger in their tech services department with a focus on juvenile materials.
The following list is a sample of the duties required of the position for illustrative purposes and may include other tasks not listed below. Under the supervision of the Head of Tech Services, performs responsible and varied paraprofessional, technical, and clerical work in the area of technical services.
Understands and is able to perform all jobs related to library technical services, including but not limited to cataloging and classifying library materials and physically processing items being added to and withdrawn from the collection.

• Maintain electronic library catalog by editing, adding and deleting MARC bibliographic records.
• Maintains consistency in the cataloging, classification, and physical processing of library materials.
• Receives shipments, and checks in newly-acquired materials.
• Repairs or returns damaged materials, as appropriate; prepares materials for shipment to the bindery.
• Maintains statistics on collection inventory and technical services activity, and provides periodic reports of same, as directed.
• Inventories and reports technical services supply needs.
• Provides patrons with general information on library services; assists and instructs patrons in using library services, equipment, and facilities.
• Assists in performing non-technical services work in the Adult and Children's Departments, as needed.
• Attends meetings, workshops, and conferences, as required.
• Performs other duties, as assigned


QUALIFICATIONS: Must have excellent computer skills. Must have an understanding of library cataloging and classification systems, and knowledge of computerized cataloging databases. Must be able to perform mathematical computations with speed and accuracy. Must have the ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing; the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with vendors and other employees; an ability to establish and follow detailed work procedures; ability to work independently and under pressure. Attention to detail is required.

Must have a High School Diploma or GED, and three (3) years of experience in a library setting. A working knowledge of cataloging preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Sitting for extended periods of time, heavy amount of data input, some lifting up to 30 lbs.; standing, walking, moving, carrying, bending, kneeling, reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling.
