Reference Librarian - Newark Public Library

-Provide an excellent customer service experience to all
--Answer reference questions in person, by phone, email, text, and with emerging technology
--Assist customers in using the catalog and other databases
--Use the Library’s diverse resources to answer in depth research questions
--Provide readers’ advisory services
--Assist job searchers looking for information, resources, and best practices
--Refer customers to social services appropriate to their needs
--Help customers navigating government agencies
--Support customers creating business plans or seeking funding for businesses or nonprofits
--Educate people in information literacy
--Advance the public’s computer literacy
--Excel at serving a diverse clientele in a major urban library
--Plan and implement public programs

Other activities include developing collections, giving library tours, teaching classes to staff and patrons, participating in outreach activities, and serving on library committees. The Newark Public Library is a learning organization, and librarians here constantly scan our professional and community environments for new opportunities for library service.

The Reference Division is a Statewide Reference Center, answering other NJ libraries’ research requests in art, business, music, patents and trademarks, U.S. government documents, New Jersey information, and other topics as needed. As part of the reference team, the librarian will conduct in-depth research.


REQUIREMENTS: MLS or MLIS from an ALA accredited program and a New Jersey Professional Librarian’s Certificate This position requires New Jersey residency, as stipulated by N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70).

SCHEDULE AND SALARY: This is a full time 35 hour per week position with 20 vacation days per year. The schedule includes one evening per week and every other Saturday. Salary is $52,819.
