University Librarian - Fairleigh Dickinson University

The University Librarian reports to the University Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs (UPSVPAA) and is the chief academic and administrative officer of the university's Library System, including the libraries at the university's New Jersey campuses and the overseas campuses.  As such, the University Librarian is responsible for the maintenance and development of archival and reference resources in the libraries appropriate to the academic programs they serve, the development of a university-wide digital library which provides electronic library resources to faculty and students on the campuses and at remote locations and supports the university's distance learning initiatives, and management and planning for the physical facilities housing the libraries.  Reporting directly to this position are the Associate University Librarians and associated library staff.  The University Librarian chairs the University Library Council.


1.    Master of Library Science from an ALA accredited library school.  Ph.D., D.L.S., or second Master's degree desirable.  

2.    Five to ten years of academic library experience in positions of increasing responsibility, including managerial experience in a multi-campus institution, and experience with public service and technical service functions and budget planning and administration.  

3.    Experience and training in library and information technologies is essential.  The successful candidate must have a broad understanding of the effect of technological innovation on the functioning and configuration of university libraries, and must have the capacity to be proactive in planning for the library of the future and in developing appropriate information resources in a dynamic technological environment.  

4.    Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.  Excellent interpersonal skills are essential. Must possess acute interpersonal awareness to efficaciously build relationships and resolve human resources issues.

5.    Must possess the ability to adapt to changes in the work environment, delays or unexpected events

6.    Employment is contingent upon a satisfactory background check.  Candidates for hire will be required to sign a waiver authorizing the background check and produce a Social Security Card.
