Youth Services Librarian - River Vale Public Library

The River Vale Free Public Library seeks a Youth Services Librarian to serve the children and young adults of River Vale in their educational and recreational pursuits. The Youth Services Librarian oversees all collection development and programming for children and young adults under the supervision of the Library Director.

Responsibilities:
Using an annual budget, select and purchase all materials for children (toddlers through 5th Grade) and young adults (6th through 8th Grade.) Link purchased materials in the BCCLS database. De-select outdated/damaged materials to ensure that the collection is attractive and relevant to library users.
Maintain a collection that is relevant to the needs of River Vale students. This is accomplished through regular communication and outreach to the local school district.
Create, schedule, and execute programming for the Children’s and Young Adults’ Departments which includes: Spring, Fall, Winter, Summer Story Times, Summer Reading Program, After-School/Week-End Programming and Special Events.
Supervise the Youth Services Assistant in the planning, scheduling and execution of all crafts and programming associated with the department.
Promote Youth Services programs by creating flyers and other publicity using the latest software.
Schedule and supervise volunteers to assist with collection maintenance and programming.
Work in a supervisory capacity when assigned, handling all reference and general library operations.
Assist at the circulation desk, as needed.

 

Qualifications/Requirements: 

At least two years experience working as a Youth Services Librarian with a proven track record demonstrating success in the areas of collection use by the community, collaboration with local schools and successful programming initiatives.
Strong written and verbal skills.
Excellent interpersonal, organizational and customer service skills.
Strong technology skills, including the utilization of software for collection maintenance, the generation of creative publicity and social media communication.
Must be able to work weekday, evening and weekend hours both in assisting at the Circulation Desk and in a supervisory capacity for all library staff.
Must be able to perform light lifting and bending. BCCLS experience is a plus.
