New Jersey Library Association's Legislative Priorities 2016/2017

New Jersey's Libraries: Community Assets

Libraries are essential community assets. New Jersey libraries provide access to information, technology, e-government and job seeker assistance as well as early childhood and adult literacy services and continuing education and instruction for all ages.  Ensuring that the residents of New Jersey have strong, relevant library services to meet today’s challenges requires a strong partnership between local libraries and the state of New Jersey.

Testimony before the Joint Committee on the Public Schools

On October 11th, 2016 Pat Tumulty, Executive Director of the New Jersey Library Association (NJLA) and James Keehbler, Chair of the NJLA School Libraries Taskforce were asked to give testimony about ESSA and school library programs in New Jersey to the Joint Committee on Public Schools.  We provided packets with statements from NJLA, VALE/NJACRL, examples of rules and regulations from other states, the NJ School Library Report and information about the Unlock Student Potential campaign and other relevant information.

Advocacy for Highly Effective School Library Programs in New Jersey

The New Jersey Library Association, along with partners, is actively advocating for New Jersey students to have the opportunity to improve literacy and build information literacy skills taught by a state certified school library media specialist.  These skills will prepare New Jersey Students for college and beyond.
