NJLA Library Advocacy Fortnight

Join us this April 3 to 17 as library staff and supporters visit the local offices of NJ legislators to talk about the roles of our libraries in our communities and schools as well as the legislative agenda of the New Jersey Library Association.  Our organization is advocating for four bills:

Draft Resolution and Letters of Support for Library Boards Supporting School Libraries and Library Capital Construction

NJLA has created templates for a model resolutions for Public Library Board to pass in support of school library programs (https://njla.org/sites/default/files/NJLA-School-Library-Resolution_0.docx) in New Jersey and letters of support for the New Jersey Library Capital Construction Bond Bill (http://njlibrariesbuildcommunities.org/how-you-can-help/).

New Jersey's Libraries: Community Assets

Libraries are essential community assets. New Jersey libraries provide access to information, technology, e-government and job seeker assistance as well as early childhood and adult literacy services and continuing education and instruction for all ages.  Ensuring that the residents of New Jersey have strong, relevant library services to meet today’s challenges requires a strong partnership between local libraries and the state of New Jersey.

Testimony before the Joint Committee on the Public Schools

On October 11th, 2016 Pat Tumulty, Executive Director of the New Jersey Library Association (NJLA) and James Keehbler, Chair of the NJLA School Libraries Taskforce were asked to give testimony about ESSA and school library programs in New Jersey to the Joint Committee on Public Schools.  We provided packets with statements from NJLA, VALE/NJACRL, examples of rules and regulations from other states, the NJ School Library Report and information about the Unlock Student Potential campaign and other relevant information.
