People's Rights to Libraries

The New Jersey Library Association affirms its belief in the public right to library service - as stated in the following tenets:

1. All people are entitled to free access to the information and knowledge within a library.

2. All people are entitled to obtain current, accurate information on any topic of interest.

3. All people are entitled to courteous, efficient, and prompt service.

4. All people are entitled to assistance by qualified library personnel.

5. All people are entitled to the right of privacy in the selection or use of materials.

NJLA Statement on Searching Patrons

In support of free access to information as traditionally endorsed by NJLA, libraries should not impose obstacles or conditions that would discourage or impede individuals from entering and using the library. Libraries that choose to implement security procedures involving patron searches are encouraged to ensure that the system is related to the specific need or goal of the library and is not related to any informational pursuits of any patron or class of patron. Libraries should also ensure that the system is not overly intrusive, and is consistent in its application.

NJLA Statement on School/Public Library Joint Use Standards

Continuous learning is the foundation of the twenty-first century. Every resident of New Jersey will be seeking new opportunities to learn and grow. From infants to older adults, learning will be an ongoing pursuit. Access to educational resources will be the key. It has been widely recognized that libraries play a critical role in our educational process. In New Jersey there are currently 451 public library facilities and 2,295 school libraries. The demand for library services is increasing.

NJLA Statement on Children and Libraries

The New Jersey Library Association and the New Jersey Library Trustee Association provided funding for Grayson Barber, Esq. to develop this document regarding unattended children in New Jersey public libraries. This document is provided as background information on this topic and for the benefit of the members of NJLA and NJLTA. Every public library is encouraged to adopt its own policy regarding unattended children and have the local policy reviewed by the library’s attorney.
