The South Brunswick Library, located halfway between the metropolitan hubs of NYC and Philadelphia, is home to a diverse, growing community that values all the services the Library provides. Our staff is dedicated to providing excellent customer service through innovative programming, community engagement and outreach, and our Mobile Branch.

 Our Library is in its final year of a multi-million construction project to expand and repurpose our existing building. We are excited to bring new team members aboard as we build our next chapter at the South Brunswick Public Library. Renovations will include a new auditorium, state-of-the art meeting room, an expanded Teen Room, group study rooms, an instruction lab and more.

 The South Brunswick Public Library is seeking a part-time Cataloging Librarian to work 12 hours per week in its Technical Services Department. The schedule for this position is flexible but will include some daytime hours.

Working collaboratively with the Supervising Technical Library Assistant, the Library Cataloger is responsible for cataloging and maintaining bibliographic records and ensuring accuracy and accessibility for patrons and staff.  This role involves working with various formats, including books, periodicals and audiovisual materials. The ideal candidate will have experience working with Polaris, knowledge of cataloging standards and have a passion for organizing information.

Key responsibilities:

  • Obtain, edit or create Marc records in the automated library catalog
  • Work with collection librarians to assign call numbers to library materials to ensure discoverability and ease of access
  • Perform copy cataloging of library materials and occasional original cataloging as needed across various formats
  • Verify and edit bibliographic records for accuracy, consistency, and adherence to local and national standards
  • Prepare labels for the processing of materials
  • Collaborate with technical services and other library departments to improve work flows and maintain cataloging integrity
  • Stay current about updates and best practices to the ILS system by attending STELLA trainings
  • Assist in maintaining accurate authority headings in the public access catalog
  • Support collection development efforts by providing cataloging insights and recommendations

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program
  • Experience in cataloging and classification within a library setting preferred
  • Experience with integrated library systems, preferably Polaris
  • Strong attention to detail and analytical skills
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment
  • Ability to speak, write and communicate in English effectively
  • Must pass a criminal background check

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to work with multiple languages
  • Experience working in a STELLA library or other consortium environment
  • Experience providing reference service

The 2024 salary range is $31.39-$34.08/hour.  The Library is under contract negotiations for a new 2025 contract.
