Statement in Support of Pay Transparency for All New Jersey Library Workers

September 17, 2024

The New Jersey Library Association acknowledges the harmful effect on both applicants and institutions when libraries fail to include a salary, range, or rate of pay in job postings.

When employers omit clear compensation information from a job posting, it creates a dynamic where candidates are unable to make informed decisions, diminishes trust, and often results in fewer quality applicants and more failed searches.

Salary omission does not align with NJLA’s mission to “advance the standards of librarianship in New Jersey” or “to protect the professional interests of the members of the Association.” Vague phrases such as “compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications” are not suitable substitutes for pay transparency.

We, hereby, urge all New Jersey libraries to include “good faith” salary, range, or rate of pay information in all job postings, without exception. It helps set clear expectations and fosters a more positive and efficient recruitment experience.

To this end, beginning 1/1/2025, NJLA will require all job listings to include a “good faith” salary, range, or rate of pay, in order to be posted on the Job Hotline, in addition to our continued advocacy for pay transparency in general.
